Ford tractors are beloved among collectors due to their ease of operation and maintenance, availability of parts, low price point, and long lifespan without needing major repairs.
Prior to releasing its flagship Model T automobile, Ford conducted several prototype experiments using readily available components. One such prototype was a tractor constructed using Model T engine parts mounted on an adaptable wagon chassis – this experiment served as an early precursor of what would later become the popular seller Model A which sold from 1927 until replaced by 9N in 1937.
The Model 9N introduced Harry Ferguson’s three-point hitch system and became an enormously successful tractor in North America at that time – by some accounts, even surpassing the John Deere Model D in popularity! Production ended for this model in 1948 when production ceased, and production of its successor, 8Ns, was designed similarly but with improved engineering for better power output and more control capabilities than before.
In 1944, the front axle radius rods were updated to an oval tube design, which was lighter but just as strong, while simultaneously, the rear axle/hub was upgraded with a larger diameter and stronger stamped steel stamping design that would remain in use until 1955. Also in 1944, the steering wheel received an update featuring a hard rubber exterior with three steel spokes in its center.
Some tractors were manufactured with engines with serial numbers beginning A253-xx that were intended for stationary power units or combines, although these engines may have been further customized by farmers by adding extra fuel ports or modifications such as modified wiring harnesses.

Ford N series tractors entered the 1950s with some modifications. Starting at serial number 9N15000, their battery/fuel cover was replaced by a door that can easily be opened for access but remains attached so as to not get lost. A longer oil line was also added so as to route return oil from governor through engine to help lubricate it more effectively.
Ford introduced their big 401-cubic inch Model 8000 tractor a few years later, featuring numerous options like turbocharging engine for up to 131 PTO horsepower or dual power system that split transmission gear ranges into different ranges.
At around this time, a new engine serial number system, A253-xx, began. This code denoted the tractor frame number while its initial three numbers denoted engine frame type and type; its fourth letter denoted engine type; its final four characters indicated engine code usage. This part of engine numbering provides invaluable insight into which parts and accessories make up each tractor model.
Shortly thereafter, a larger version of the 401 cubic inch engine made its debut in the 1000 series as the 7000 model. Although slightly larger than its N counterpart, this engine boasted substantially increased drawbar horsepower (184 drawbar horsepower and 107 PTO horsepower).
Around this time, these tractors underwent changes to both their hood and steering wheels as well. The hood became slightly wider to accommodate their larger engine; at serial number 9N80770, the dash panel changed from one-piece cast aluminum to cast iron plate, with the starter button moved forward onto it for use only when in neutral. Furthermore, their steering wheel became a plastic-covered three-spoke design with chrome nuts and washers holding it tight.

Ford’s hydraulic system is both elegant and straightforward; when adjusted and maintained properly, it performs flawlessly. This system utilizes a piston-type pump with internal control valves as well as a lift cylinder connected to the rear axles that are controlled via control lever/quadrant control; all this is connected via flexible lines connected to the tractor chassis with a pressure relief valve located within the transmission.
Ford quickly convinced the government that tractors were just as essential as any other product, and regulations were relaxed to allow 2N models with rubber tires and starters but without chrome wheels or magneto systems to have rubber tires and starters; 9N front “smooth” axle hub was replaced with stronger two piece riveted hub; rear tires became standard at 10×28 sizes, as was their hood’s steel design – push button start being moved onto left side of dashboard below ammeter for easier start-ups.
The 8N was the first major redesign since 1939 and although it still appeared similar, many improvements were implemented. The engine was overhauled, increasing horsepower through compression ratio changes. A 134 cubic inch overhead valve engine was used with live hydraulics installed as standard equipment. On its front sheet metal was a newly designed “cyclops” emblem and red paint replaced lighter gray trim for color change.
Ford launched a special model to commemorate their 50th anniversary: the NAA Jubilee. This car featured a more powerful 134 cubic inch engine, more live hydraulics, and a newly designed front emblem; model numbering was altered, too, with series one models having two numerals to indicate transmission, hitch, and PTO options.
