Dozens of years ago, fuel prices and stricter environmental standards led to an evolution in which Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) replaced carburetors. EFI enhanced power while simultaneously decreasing consumption and emissions.
EFI systems rely on a computer chip known as an engine control unit (ECU) as their brain. The ECU takes input from sensors throughout the system and uses it to send accurate pulses of fuel at exactly the right moment – creating improved atomization, less wasted fuel, and reduced unburned hydrocarbon emissions, as well as higher compression ratios while simultaneously decreasing fuel consumption and emissions.
When your car needs more power, the computer directs the fuel pump to increase pressure in its line. It then utilizes feedback from the oxygen sensor and throttle position sensor sensors in order to establish an appropriate fuel delivery rate; depending on these signals, it then changes how long injectors remain active – the longer a pulse lasts means more fuel will be delivered; shorter pulses equal leaner fuel mixture.
As the car moves along, its ECU continually fine-tunes injection pulses based on an intricate map that takes into account factors like air temperature, altitude and engine load. These maps allow the computer to accommodate for a wide variety of operating conditions – making EFI far more reliable than carburetors.
ECU also monitors air-fuel mixture during idling and sends signals to an idle air control valve to vary airflow to the engine at precisely the right moment – this allows the tractor to maintain low speed without pressing down on its throttle pedal, as well as smooth idling without pressure applied by its driver. IAC helps keep engine RPM constant under heavy load by shutting off throttle completely when necessary.

John Deere released its 8010 tractors in 1969 as one of its finest machines ever built, boasting four-wheel drive, an expansive diesel engine, articulated steering, and four-wheel drive capabilities. Unfortunately, though, early Spicer transmissions were susceptible to overheating, which caused seal failure and clutch oil soakage, following an outbreak in all 100 models recalled and renamed as 8020s; unfortunately, this failed to save its machine from destruction.
ERTL’s 1/16 scale model accurately reproduces this machine down to every detail, from its tail lights and die-cast fenders to its contoured operator seat with hydraulic levers and control console.
