John Deere has long been recognized for their innovative spirit, especially in regard to tractors. They were among the first companies to ever produce one and later went on to design many popular models that remain today. Now celebrating their centennial anniversary with classic tractor displays and merchandise releases.
Celebrations for this milestone anniversary will include a limited-edition 9RX tractor model and fan merchandise such as hats, shirts, and mugs for fans to commemorate the occasion. In addition, the company will sell centennial badges commemorating 100 years since its founding. These badges will come standard on all tractors purchased this year – something it has done ever since its acquisition of Heinrich Lanz’s factory in 1956, which continues producing quality tractors today and enjoys an excellent reputation within its industry.
Deere & Company began its long relationship with Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company when they purchased it in 1918, marking an ambitious step into the tractor business by Deere. Although Deere had developed their own plows before entering this field, Deere’s decision to enter the tractor business was ambitious as they desired a tractor that met customers’ needs with reliable and adaptable machines as key elements in meeting those goals.
After World War 1, human and equine populations in Europe declined, leading to a greater need for tractors. Waterloo Company products became immensely popular throughout North America and Great Britain. Following the success of their Waterloo Boy Model R, work began on an improved design for Model N production – this first branded John Deere tractor. Production took place from 1917 through 1924.

Ford’s N Series tractors are some of the most coveted vintage tractors on the market today. Still in use and boasting long lifespans, they remain reliable machines. Easy to maintain and suitable for multiple purposes – check online retailers for good deals if interested!
In 1917, when the first Model N tractor was introduced, it was gray in color. Around 1940, however, the company decided to change to blue as part of an effort to reach out to a wider audience while simultaneously representing reliability and strength through color choice.
Ford Motor Company quickly recognized during the wartime material shortages that in order to continue production of tractors, they must make drastic adjustments. Tractors would need to be stripped down of any rubber tires or batteries before being constructed without magneto ignition and steel wheels – this meant only being started using a hand crank.
Before long, the government recognized the vital role tractors played in nation-building and lifted restrictions. Thus, the 2N tractor. Slightly different than its 9N predecessor, its serial number prefix remained the same, and its new name distinguished it from other models. Furthermore, this model could also be sold complete with batteries and rubber tires for easy transportation.
At this same time, clutch pedal linkages were upgraded from their previous design of using a bolt that connected directly to a lever arm to release clutching to an easier and more reliable pushrod system. Furthermore, a snap-in cover was added for easier opening/closing action of the hood.
At this same time, the air cleaner inlet was also altered, replacing its old style with a larger stamped steel design used throughout the 8N production run. Finally, the front axle radius rods were upgraded with lighter oval tube designs that made working easier.
