Farm tractors have dramatically transformed agriculture in America and enabled it to become one of the leading agricultural economies. Farmers have used farm tractors to increase crop output while simultaneously cutting labor costs; all this has resulted in improved quality food production across America.
The initial tractors were powered by steam engines. While these large, expensive machines could plow and drive mowers and reapers, their poor power-to-weight ratio caused operators to wait while building enough steam pressure before starting work – leading to their rapid decline by the early 1920s.
John Froelich introduced gasoline-powered tractors into agricultural use during the late 1880s. These machines replaced steam tractors that had long dominated the powered agriculture revolution, providing faster, more reliable service without their predecessor’s tendency to explode unexpectedly. Furthermore, these gas tractors brought rubber tires, which reduced damage caused to fields by road accidents.
Even with these improvements, many small farms could not afford the tractors they needed for farming purposes; as a result, many had to give up or convert to dairy farming instead. The Fordson tractor, introduced in 1917 as the first mass-produced tractor with proven success was small, lightweight, affordable and simple enough for anyone to operate – it even started quickly!
At the start of the twentieth century, hundreds of firms began manufacturing or selling farm tractors. Unfortunately, during agricultural depressions in 1920-21 and 1930-32 many went out of business; others merged together into larger firms; eventually only seven companies, such as Ford and International Harvester, held onto their market shares.

Instead of needing an expansive area to operate, gasoline-powered tractors were portable and easily moved around to perform various tasks around a farm. Their smaller engines and lower center of gravity made them easier for farmers to handle while maneuvering through tight spaces or around obstacles; making them invaluable assets to any successful farm operation.
John Froelich, an Iowa farmer, created the first gasoline-powered tractor in 1892. While steam-powered plowing engines existed previously, they were difficult to control and often experienced explosions; Froelich’s invention proved faster, more powerful, and safer compared with earlier models – leading to their widespread adoption on farms around the country.
At the dawn of the 20th century, hundreds of companies started producing and selling tractors, but due to agricultural depressions in 1920-21 and 1930-32 many of these firms went out of business or merged together into larger entities such as Ford and International Harvester. By 1925 only seven firms had become industry leaders including these two manufacturers (Ford and International Harvester respectively) that produced general-purpose Farmall tractors characterized by small front wheels with low ground clearance suited for cultivating, plowing, cutting crops etc.
Bi-directional engines were another significant advancement for farm tractors. These innovative engines allowed operators to perform complex tasks more easily while decreasing labor costs and increasing productivity for farmers.
Modern tractors are powered by internal-combustion engines running on gasoline, kerosene, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) or diesel fuel, producing power that is transferred through an eight-speed transmission gearbox directly to their wheels through a drive shaft. Wheels may feature rubber or grass (turf) tires which cause less damage on soft surfaces than agricultural tires; modern models also feature more controls that are computerized.

The tractor revolutionized farming by increasing harvest sizes while requiring fewer workers for harvests, but at the same time freeing millions of agricultural laborers to move into cities as factory or service workers in an expanding economy – contributing significantly to urban America’s expansion while concurrently depopulating rural regions. This change contributed significantly to urban America’s rise and rural America’s subsequent decline.
Rubber tires were crucial in driving the tractor industry forward to where it stands today, helping reduce damage to fields and improving maneuverability. John Deere introduced power lift tractors in 1927, eliminating the time-consuming and tiring practice of manually lifting an implement before every turn; manufacturers quickly adopted this feature.
After World War I, compression-ignition diesel engines began appearing in tractors as an alternative to gasoline-powered engines. While these tractors remained heavy and difficult to maneuver, their compression ignition diesel engines burned less fuel while providing more power for plowing and other equipment.
Specialized tractors have since been developed for specific tasks, including “row crop” tractors which can pass easily between rows of planted crops without damaging the plants; orchard tractors which were specifically designed for fruit orchard use such as having features that allow them to avoid crushing of fruit trees; tree branch-snagging risk is reduced via underslung exhaust pipes instead of smokestack-style exhaust and large sheet metal cowlings and fairings that allow branches to deflect off rather than catch; utility tractors which feature low centers of gravity to simplify handling loaders and backhoes; and utility tractors with low centers of gravity for easier control when handling loaders and backhoes.
