How do Brakes on Classic Tractors Work?

Tractors and heavy equipment operate under demanding conditions, with regular car brakes not designed to handle their extreme environments. Wet disc brakes offer sufficient stopping power without directly being exposed to mud, debris or extreme weather conditions – they’re found on most large construction vehicles and tractors and may also be less costly than dry brakes.
Disc Brakes: Disc brakes use hydraulic fluid in a caliper to squeeze friction pads against a disc to slow the wheel, typically found on riding mowers and smaller utility tractors. Drum Brakes use pistons containing hydraulic fluid to force friction shoe pads outward against drum walls to slow the wheel, similar to disc brakes. Air Brakes use air pressure as power instead of hydraulic fluid as a power source.

One long, north/south road became the town’s main street; another street leading west quickly branching off to homesteads and new homesteads. To the south of this main road and around a curve was where Mark Heath lived with his family – although ultimately, this town never expanded enough to include all these outlying residences.
Oakfield was home to a post office, which first opened its doors on October 22, 1858, and eventually closed down on November 29th, 1881. Amherst Heath was the inaugural post-master before Nattie Hamlin took over later. The post-office was situated in Brown House (later called Heath Place) located on Brown Avenue; later known as Heath Place due to being plastered several times. Remodeled several times later by family, this home remains in possession of this family today and remains a popular social gathering spot during spring thaws when river gorges would open up, and water boats would ply Nishnabotna River upstream to Brayton. The post office served the social purpose of welcoming visitors during spring thaws when water boats would cross Nishnabotna River upstream to Brayton from where water boats would ply upstream through Brayton-bound, and Brayton was accessible.
