The Hornsby-Akroyd Patent Safety Oil Traction Engine was one of the earliest internal combustion engines ever created. It was designed by British inventor Herbert Akroyd Stuart and built by English steam engine makers Richard Hornsby & Sons of Grantham Lincolnshire in England. Powered by paraffin (heavy) oil with vapouriser assistance to facilitate combustion, this engine served as the precursor of hot-bulb engines, and diesel engines were developed later.
At the 1891 Royal Agricultural Show in Doncaster, England, an oil tractor made its debut. Shortly afterwards, several special versions were produced to meet customer demands: one narrow model could traverse vineyard rows while a version made especially for an Australian fruit grower was considered the world’s first orchard tractor.
Another key use was for hauling farm transport vehicles such as threshing machines behind the tractor using a carriage on tracks or wheels, similar to how threshing machines are transported and powered. Furthermore, its traction engine could also power other forms of farm machinery like plows, mowers, and seed drills.
Hornsby-Akroyd traction engines stood out from their competition by being designed to produce fuel on-site, giving greater control over both quality and cost than typical petrol or gasoline engines. Some versions even ran on peanut, Arachis, and vegetable oil instead of more costly fossil fuels such as petroleum.
Richard Hornsby & Sons realized the declining demand for agricultural steam engines, so their engineering efforts were diverted toward improving oil engines instead. After being so successful at this endeavor, steam engine manufacturing ceased altogether, and Richard Hornsby-Akroyd merged with Ruston & Proctor Ltd to form Caterpillar Inc.
The Universal was the flagship design of Dan Albone and Company and could be used with various types of equipment, as evidenced in an on-farm demonstration held by him at the 1906 Royal Agricultural Show. At that show, it pulled a binder harvesting wheat sheaves to be transported for threshing by another machine before finally transporting heaves back for processing by another threshing machine.

One of the Ivel’s distinguishing features was its wheel configuration: two large steel wheels at its back provided traction while its smaller front wheel featured a solid rubber tyre with extra grip on soft ground as well as extra purchase for traveling over road surfaces; this feature would later become standard on modern tractors.
The Ivel was an exceptionally versatile engine designed to run on any of these fuel sources and could also accommodate multiple speeds by simply adjusting gear levers on its dashboard.
Ivels were not only used on farms; they could also be seen at parades and other entertainment events. Thanks to its ability to carry heavy loads while traversing rough terrain and travel quickly enough to be useful as part of parades.

The Fordson tractor was an innovative innovation of the early 1900s. As the first mass-produced tractor that could be sold at much reduced costs than competing models, its introduction made headlines at that time. Henry Ford, the inventor of the Model T automobile, wanted to improve farmers’ lives by providing more convenient ways for them to power machinery and harvest crops.
In 1917, Ford set about to create a tractor designed to meet this goal. The first few thousand were assembled in Dearborn, Michigan, before being sent off to Great Britain, where they helped counter an enemy blockade during World War I. The British government requested that Mr. Ford use the name “Fordson” as this was an abbreviation for Henry Ford & Son, which was the original name of his tractor business.
The initial production years for Fordson were fruitful, despite engine issues and unbearable heat; annual production reached 36,781 by 1921, and it established an indelible presence on American farms.
Fordson was one of the trendsetting tractors of its day and most popular. Its unit frame design, which combined the engine and transmission case, was revolutionary at the time; this combined structure included an advanced magneto system to improve starting ability, as well as a thermo-siphon cooling system to cool its engine.
By 1928, however, increased competition from International Harvester Company’s Farmall line had seriously reduced Fordson’s sales and market share. Furthermore, Ford was focused on building his new car and could not devote his full attention to pursuing tractor sales.
Fordson continued production after they left the US market, producing United models in Cork and Dagenham, England, respectively. These tractors received minor engineering modifications such as adding air cleaners or switching out flywheel magnetos with high-tension impulse varieties; some models even pioneered diesel-burning technologies. Later, these Fordsons were upgraded to E27N Major models, which featured PTO and three-point linkages (threePL), enabling them to work row crops for the first time ever.
