Discover the Country Behind CLAAS Tractors

By Tom Seest

What Country Manufactures CLAAS Tractors?

At ClassicTractorNews, we help classic tractor lovers keep up with the latest news for classic and vintage tractors.

CLAAS’ headquarters are in Harsewinkel, Germany, where it manufactures its combine harvesters and forage harvester attachments. Furthermore, its Le Mans facility produces the XERION tractor.
This company has undertaken significant improvements at their production plant in Le Mans. One key change is moving to 3D digital modeling as this provides an integral link between design and manufacturing to ensure quality, increase output, and address complex situations more easily.

Discovering Le Mans’ CLAAS Tractor Legacy

CLAAS tractor factory at Le Mans is home to their flagship Xerion series tractors, as well as design and production for 105 models ranging from 75hp Axos up to the 460hp Axion 900 series. Additionally, Nexos and Elios smaller horsepower tractors are manufactured by Cararro in Italy while Axion 1500 series uses an innovative track system instead of wheels in its rear to reduce soil compaction while increasing crop yield sustainably.
This factory employs over 800 people, making it one of the largest production plants worldwide by production volume. Highly automated facilities such as this one have seen production grow by more than 50% since opening their doors in 1989. Since the late 1990s, their global expansion began by opening factories and sales locations in other countries, as well as service centers offering customer support and maintenance.
CLAAS leverages advanced design and manufacturing processes with cutting-edge software solutions such as 3D modeling and virtual simulation to increase its productivity and flexibility through digitalization. CLAAS employs Dassault System’s 3DEXPERIENCE platform for managing assembly lines and developing machines of greater complexity; using this approach enables them to anticipate customizations ahead of time and reduce workforce strain.
Example: the company used the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to digitalize their factory during the development of the AXION 900 TERRA TRAC model tractor, enabling integration of a crawler track system at the rear end for better soil protection and increased crop yield; additionally, this approach also helped them avoid costly redesigns or delays as well as reduced assembly times significantly.
The factory employs an unusual quality process that sets it apart from other manufacturers. Instead of asking workers to inspect completed tractors, their quality team asks them to answer questions about what they see; this keeps employees more alert while decreasing errors.

Uncovering the German Roots of CLAAS Tractors

CLAAS, a German manufacturer best known for its agricultural machinery and tractors, also produces leading forestry and construction equipment. CLAAS boasts over 3000 registered patents as well as multiple awards received.
Now one of Europe’s premier producers of tractors, Harsewinkel is home to its main plant. However, additional plants have also been established across other countries, and production and sales locations have opened in India (1989), the US (1999), Russia (2005), China (2012), and South America. Furthermore, in 2003, Harsewinkel expanded into traditional tractors by purchasing a majority stake in Renault Agriculture.
Volkswagen Group factories have evolved into some of the most cutting-edge and sophisticated in the world, recently earning a place on the list of futuristic factories with their use of cutting-edge digital technology. A facility in Le Mans, France, earned this name and has received various accolades, including the French Factory of the Future awards in 2017. These facilities also manufacture its new models, Arion 630 and Axion 650, which were produced here.
Visitors of this plant are immediately struck by its cleanliness and brightness, with production floors that are highly automated. Forty driverless vehicles transport chassis through each station of 1.3km main assembly line to complete one tractor assembly line from start to finish.
CLAAS machines are manufactured to the highest standards. Every component must meet CLAAS’ stringent specifications; to do this, robots inspect and test components immediately after their production. This system ensures traceability for every tractor while being extremely fast: assembly for a 450hp XERION takes just over four hours!
The main assembly line spans 1.3km-long track that produces up to 75 tractors daily. To increase efficiency, each sub-assembly is located adjacent to the main line with large screens showing how many tractors remain to be built as well as how long operators have left to complete their respective tasks. This system enables workers to perform their jobs efficiently while creating the best machines possible.

Discover the Italian Craftsmanship Behind CLAAS Tractors!

CLAAS’ Le Mans Factory was selected as France’s Factory of the Future in 2017. At 1.3km long and with the capacity of producing 75 tractors per day, this facility features state-of-the-art production technology as well as a sophisticated central control room that regulates assembly line speed while monitoring quality, managed by a team of 30 engineers. This system may well be considered one of the world’s most advanced.
Le Mans is home to 52 acres and employs 800 staff members, responsible for designing and manufacturing 105 models ranging from the 75hp Axos Series up to the larger 460hp Axion 900 Series. Cabs and powertrain components are produced here as well. Their smaller model utilizes engines from Deutz in Germany while larger 114-260hp models use engines from FPT in Turin.
In 2021, the factory adopted a custom design platform which enabled it to produce more diverse tractors. This new approach included reworking engine components, adding electronics components and new operator interfaces as well as updating chassis axles and transmissions resulting in more versatile yet fuel-efficient machines.
On the production floor, each station features a large screen that displays live targets and numbers of tractors being assembled as well as remaining time for operators to complete their tasks. This system helps increase productivity and quality while each operator must answer a series of questions on screen in order to check their work; this process keeps workers alert while decreasing mistakes.
The plant is an impressive producer of transmissions, axles, and front-end loaders. CLAAS Industrietechnik in Paderborn provides its EQ step-less infinitely variable transmissions, while ZF manufactures its Cmatic CVT for this factory. GIMA also develops powershift transmissions and Hexashift CVTs specifically tailored for CLAAS and Massey Ferguson at this facility.
