Why is this Classic John Deere So Special?

John Deere has had an illustrious history that parallels its iconic tractor namesake. Established by blacksmith and farmer John Deere after Vermont experienced economic disaster following its economic bubble burst in 1837, John Deere helped shape agriculture forever through his vision and hard work.
Beginning in the early 1900s, farmers gradually transitioned from horses to tractors. Deere dealers wanted to retain customer loyalty by keeping customers within the brand, so in March 1912, the board of directors directed engineering firm Dain Manufacturing (now part of Deere) to design a new tractor; Joseph Dain, an innovative member of their board who had proven himself innovative tinkerer himself was given this task.
Over the following couple of years, Dain and his team spent considerable effort designing a three-wheeled automobile utilizing cutting-edge engineering technology. When their efforts bore fruit in 1917, the board approved the production of 100 Waterloo Boys, an iconic name eventually acquired by them all.
After several more years of successful model development, the board opted for four-wheel drive tractor production. First came model A, then B; these models became so popular that Swedish manufacturer Gnosjo Mekaniska Verkstad (GM) attempted to copy them. Unfortunately for GM, though, they weren’t as popular and ended up getting sued by Deere for patent infringement.
After the Great Depression began, farmers increasingly turned to larger tractors such as 5E and 6D series models in order to keep pace with harvests. These tractors included features such as four-wheel drive and closed-center hydraulics, significantly enhancing hydraulic performance.
John Deere tractors remain among the industry leaders and are highly sought-after on the market. John Deere products can be found used for many purposes, such as farms and lawns – they even make great decorative pieces! From two-cylinder “Johnny Poppers” to the 1960s 830 Series, there’s something special to satisfy every John Deere fan out there!
