No matter if it’s just for driving to and from stores or heavy-duty land work, the Ford 8N tractor is an undisputed classic. Highly prized for its handling, simplicity, and availability of spare parts – as well as its looks – this classic American machine stands up well when put into service. A reliable dealer should inspect both rear tires, steering, and three-point hitch arms to make sure there’s no play in them while also testing three-point hitch arms to see if they stay up while you stand on them. Though not originally intended to take wet lines, I have seen one that had been jury-rigged to do just that – although not recommended. A great way to learn more about an 8N is by reading its FO-4 shop manual, which should retail for about $12 from most Ford tractor dealers.

The MH-44 tractor is one of the top-selling tractors of all time, boasting unparalleled sales figures since its release. As a 2WD tractor powered by one of four engine variants and featuring unsynchronized transmission and dry disc clutch, it makes an excellent choice for small-scale farming or those new to agriculture. It has become increasingly popular due to this versatility.
The Massey Harris MH-44 was introduced for sale in 1948 and quickly proved itself to be an extremely versatile tractor capable of performing multiple tasks, including plowing, planting, and hauling. Equipped with a 477cc Continental engine that runs on gasoline or diesel and is equipped with muffler, instruments, and PTO capabilities – it can even come standard or row crop configured!

The 630LP can be used for plowing and tilling with its category two 3-point hitch, and either an LP gas or gasoline engine as power sources; fuel capacity depends on which engine it’s powered by (LP gas engine holds 125L for 33US Gallons while gasoline holds up to 76.6 L or 20.5 US gallons).
This model’s brakes may depend on what kind of engine it contains; for instance, an LP gas engine typically features a differential mechanical drum brake system that needs regular maintenance in order to function effectively. These types of brakes are common among older tractors and need regular checks in order to remain in working condition.
If your tractor features a gas engine, chances are it is equipped with a two-cylinder liquid-cooled two-cylinder gas engine that consumes up to 26.5 liters of coolant each year to remain operational and can produce 48 horsepower, providing enough power to pull four plows simultaneously.

The D-19 stood out among ACs by being their inaugural mass produced tractor with a turbo diesel engine, producing 66 PTO horsepower and more drawbar horsepower than similar gasoline or LP-gas powered models.
At the turn of the 20th Century, farmers began demanding more power from spark-ignition engines than could be provided with spark plugs alone. Tractor engineers needed a way to satisfy this growing demand – either increasing engine size or adding an induction system would do it – the D-19 was created as an answer and succeeded at filling that void.
As a five-plow tractor, the D-19 could be fitted with either a gas, LP-gas, or diesel engine at its introduction in Nebraska tests; one gas-powered D-19 produced 71.5 PTO horsepower while an LP-gas version put out 66.2, and an impressive diesel-powered version produced an astounding 62 PTO horsepower at the flywheel!
Aside from its more power-dense engine, the D-19 utilized a small Thompson turbocharger for added power. Although only producing 4 or 5 PSI of boost pressure, this unit still gave it an edge in terms of performance over its siblings.
Other updates to the D-19 included an upgraded cellulose air filter (instead of oil-bath filters) that further increased fuel economy. It marked Buda’s debut use of this filter type – later, B-Series models would switch back to oil-bath filters, however.
As well as these innovations, the D-19 introduced a split-pump power-take-off hydraulic system, which enabled it to simultaneously operate three separate attachments at the same time. Like its counterparts in its time period, this AC featured a wide adjustable front axle, dual wheel narrow rear wheel configuration, power steering capabilities, a Power Director transmission system with eight forward speeds and two reverse speeds, and the Traction Booster draft control feature.
