Edwin Foden saw diesel as being key for the future success of the lorry-building industry and thus established ERF.

Beginning in the early 1970s, JH Jennings (later Cheshire Fire Engineering) introduced special fire-engine chassis designed specifically for their purposes as standard equipment or as optional extras. These diesel engines proved far more reliable, economical, and fuel-efficient and emitted less exhaust emissions than their steam counterparts, plus they could run at higher speeds to help conquer steep grades more quickly. Unfortunately, however, ERF was never profitable, and in the 1980s, it purchased several component suppliers before ceasing production altogether.

Edwin Richard Foden established ERF in 1933 after concluding that diesel power would become increasingly important in lorry manufacturing.
