By Tom Seest
At ClassicTractorNews, we help classic tractor lovers keep up with the latest news for classic and vintage tractors.
One of the key aspects of running a smallholding is having access to appropriate farm machinery; often, this means having access to a tractor.
Collecting vintage tractors can be an avid passion of many people, and events like Cheffins’ Harrogate vintage sale are a highlight of their year.
Table Of Contents
Cheffins recently hosted its latest vintage sale, with over 2,600 lots being offered up for auction, including cars and collector items from vehicles built over 100 years ago to antique tractors made at present. Over half of all tractor and collector items offered sold; this shows there is still strong demand for quality examples that are in excellent condition.
Cheffins Salesground in Sutton near Ely in Cambridgeshire hosted its April Classic and Vintage auction, with over 142,000 views recorded online prior to sale, supported by buyers from throughout Europe.
One of the highlights of the day was a 1965 Scammell Highway Ballast Box Tractor Lorry that sold for an outstanding PS32,000. Another highlight was a 1948 Field Marshall Series II Contractors tractor, which sold for PS24,120, much higher than its pre-sale estimate price.
Oliver Godfrey, Head of Machinery at Cheffins, commented that the results of their survey indicate continued demand for classic and vintage machines. As costs for new machinery increase with longer lead times, end users and trade buyers alike have become willing to pay premium prices for well-kept secondhand equipment.
At this auction, more than 300 vintage and classic tractors were offered, with a rare 1951 Massey Ferguson 128 tractor fetching the record-setting price of PS680,000 to an Essex private collector, the highest ever paid for this model. At this auction, several modern classic tractors performed well, such as a 1951 Ford Ferguson Mk III going for PS32,500 and a 1979 John Deere 7810 Silver Jubilee tractor selling for PS31,000. Other late models also performed strongly at auction; for instance, a 1949 Field Marshall Series II Contractors tractor sold for PS24,120 while a Case David Brown 1694 4WD tractor reached PS21,654. A range of vintage tractors, trailers, collectibles, and memorabilia was also on offer. Cheffins holds one of the world’s largest monthly machinery and plant sales at its purpose-built sales ground at Sutton near Ely in Cambridgeshire. Specialized in selling tractors, construction equipment and farm/horticultural machinery.
Cheffins Vintage Auction returned to Harrogate this year following its break due to COVID-19, with over 100 classic and vintage tractors available for auction at Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate. A highlight of the day was when a 1948 Field Marshall Series II sold for PS18,760, followed by a fully restored 1964 Massey Ferguson 35X that reached PS12,328 before finally selling for an estimate between PS7,500 and PS8,500 at PS10,505.
At the auction were also numerous bygone agricultural antiquities and stationary engines from bygone days, some reaching record prices. A well-restored David Brown ‘Thresherman’ tractor sold for over PS25,000, while there was also an exceptionally rare pair of 1969 David Brown 780 Selectamatics still in their original logbooks from their manufacturing 47 years earlier – selling for more than PS25,000 each.
Other noteworthy items at the auction included a 1935 Albion LEA 47 flatbed lorry that is estimated to sell for PS11,500 as well as a private collection of Fergie implements and spares such as TE-20s, 3-ton trailers, 30cwt trailers as well as 25CFM Hydrovane compressors and Marple’s hedge cutters that made a profit at auction.
In the automotive section, a Ford 7810 tractor with only 1,710 hours on it sold for PS15,500; two John Deere 430 tractors and an ex-Army M113 armored vehicle, which had once served as a military ambulance each fetched PS11,400 at auction.
Cheffins’ next auction will take place on 23 October and features vintage vehicles from one vendor. This lot includes a restored Roadless Ploughmaster 65 (one of only 1,000 manufactured), three other tractors from that vendor, two Rangemaster 120s, and one Case IH Magnums from that vendor – not forgetting a Rangemaster 120 for sale in this sale, too!
