Tractors are expensive pieces of heavy equipment that must be maintained regularly to remain safe and efficient, which makes purchasing used tractors an economical solution while still getting reliable machinery. Furthermore, second-hand tractors often come equipped with support services and experienced mechanics who are familiar with their model, which makes maintenance much simpler while decreasing downtime significantly. Finally, buying second-hand can help farmers avoid steep depreciation costs associated with buying brand-new tractors.
Before purchasing a second-hand tractor, it is important to first determine your farming type. A small farmer may require a lightweight tractor, while large farmers require something more powerful. Also, be mindful of horsepower requirements, fuel type specifications, transmission type compatibility issues, and purchasing an appropriate model that best meets your needs.
If you are shopping for a pre-owned tractor, be sure it features good brakes. At a minimum, it should feature a mechanical braking system where a mechanical arm pushes against a disc to stop the tractor or, alternatively, a hydraulic system that uses oil or fluid as brake fluid instead of pushing against the disc. A hydraulic brake requires less maintenance and offers longer service than mechanical ones.
Also, consider the number of hours your tractor has been run when selecting one that meets your criteria. Low hours make the tractor more cost-effective; however, keep in mind that second-hand tractors may require extensive repairs in the future – in this instance, consult a professional before making your final decision and never buy without first inspecting it in person!
