At an auction held in 2014, an impressively restored 1938 Minneapolis-Moline UDLX model attracted significant bidding interest despite being decades ahead of its time.

The Comfortractor is a classic tractor with features of both farm vehicles and family cars, boasting four-cylinder KED engines with five forward gears and one reverse gear, reaching top speeds of 40mph. Reminiscent of cars from the 1930s, its bodywork includes a sunroof, three tilting windshields with wipers, a full instrument panel, and even fold-down back seat cargo storage capability – seating two people comfortably inside its interior.
Minneapolis-Moline conducted extensive consumer research that demonstrated farmers desired an enclosed cab tractor for protection from the elements. Therefore, in 1938, they created an innovative solution: The UDLX Comfortractor was intended as both an everyday tractor for working fields during the week as well as a family automobile for weekend drives.
Minneapolis-Moline implemented this plan by combining a conventional tractor frame with a car-like chassis, equipped with a gasoline engine capable of being switched into direct drive for highway travel with just the flip of a lever, single-foot brake pedals, automotive-style clutch pedals, floor-mounted throttle controls, car transmission, and car tires – essentially turning their conventional tractor frame into something with car features and characteristics.
This design proved successful, and the UDLX became the first tractor with an enclosed cabin. Unfortunately, however, its high price tag compared to John Deere or Farmall models made it inaccessible for most farmers at that time. Furthermore, its engine was designed for low revs with increased torque over power to prevent vibration at highway speeds; finally, its rear drum brakes proved insufficient at stopping such a heavy vehicle.
Minneapolis-Moline decided to stop producing the UDLX due to poor sales; however, collectors and enthusiasts still found great pleasure in it.
Bob Pripps is a retired airplane designer and avid collector of classic tractors, having written more than 30 books and magazine articles on them. His passion is evident in his maple syrup operation near Park Falls in Wisconsin, where he uses Ford Jubilee and Massey Ferguson 85 models to harvest his crop while maintaining an extensive collection of vintage models for future harvesting needs.
The Comfortractor is an iconic machine in its own right, yet far from perfect. Its narrow cab and entryway may prove uncomfortable for anyone suffering from claustrophobia, and why its designers placed such emphasis on aerodynamics is beyond me – especially considering it usually moves at a snail’s pace in vineyard farming environments. But this tractor still stands as an interesting piece of automotive and agricultural history, with its unusual appearance and functionality setting it apart from all of the classic tractors available on the market.
