International Harvester introduced one of its earliest four-wheel drive tractors, the 444, as a departure from its more well-known Farmall model. This tractor was specifically created as both a commercial-type tractor and a general utility tractor – featuring multiple loaders as well as a hydraulic system to raise its front end.
These tractors were also intended for use with the company’s “Pay Mate” dual loading system that enabled two 444s to work together to move large loads. Similar to Caterpillar and Terex systems, Pay Mate could only be ordered factory-installed when purchasing a new 444. It utilized “V”-shaped multiplier links attached to steering cylinders located high up on its neck, which worked like controls on Caterpillar models, allowing quick switching from two-wheel to four-wheel drive at the touch of a button.
In 1977, two uprated 444B’s were introduced with increased horsepower in both their tractor unit and hydraulic pump power, as well as several styling modifications, including moving the front headlight higher on the radiator surround and adding larger front headlights – this model quickly became a favorite choice among commercial logging operations, even still seen working today on logging roads.

The 486 was the inaugural International tractor to feature a four-cylinder diesel engine, revolutionizing how tractors could start in cold weather by starting with gasoline before switching over to diesel once it had warmed up. Furthermore, diesel engines had greater lugging power.
This line of tractors featured several innovations to set it apart from its competition, such as a “Z” shift pattern and 18-speed synchronized transmission; a forward airflow cooling system that sucked air from above the hood and expelled it through the front grille; Power Priority three-pump hydraulic system with color-coded controls and color rear hitch system; computer monitoring system called Sentry was introduced for the first time ever into one of its machines by the manufacturer;
IH’s 50 Series tractor line was also notable as being the first sold with a three-year or 2,500-hour engine and drive-train warranty, setting an industry standard that would quickly catch on among other tractor manufacturers. The 50 Series proved IH to be a forward-thinking company. It proved enormously popular and established their position as industry leaders. The 50 Series proved IH was here to stay.
In 1974, IH introduced a loader attachment that reduced trip bucket use through the use of a center hydraulic cylinder with double-acting side hydraulic cylinders to raise and lower the loader. This system proved far superior to previous loaders that employed trip buckets by providing more precise control for users.
By 1975, IH had revamped its entire tractor lineup, including a larger and more comfortable cab designed by industrial designer Gregg Montgomery that featured a clean, modern aesthetic ahead of its time.
IH introduced its Pro Ag Line of tractors during the 1970s. These models included an 80 HP 786 tractor, 90 HP 886 tractor, 101 HP 1086 Hydro, and 161 HP 1586 models – each with an innovative layout featuring a fuel tank positioned behind the cab over the rear axle to increase balance and ride quality.

IH’s 86 series tractor marks an important transition in its design and manufacturing approach. In 1976, all ag dealers were invited to Chicago for a dealership meeting where IH introduced its Pro-Ag line known as the “86 series.” This tractor line was specifically tailored to meet the needs of professional agri-businessmen. The 86 series included models such as 85 HP 886, 100 HP 986, 131 HP 1086, 145 HP 1486, and 161 HP 1586, as well as hydrostatic versions available to purchase. The IH 86 series employed the same narrow tricycle front end used in previous IH models; however, its design was revised to place the engine/driveline along the centerline of the tractor for improved maneuverability and an attractive appearance. Technology innovations were introduced, including a “Z” shift pattern, a new hydra-static transmission to give operators more power, and a control panel with an LCD monitor to display engine and PTO information. Notable features included its forward airflow cooling system that pulled cool air from above the hood to be routed through its grille, as well as a three-pump hydraulic system with power priority and built-in protective frame meeting SAE and OSHA safety standards, color-coded hydraulic lines and controls and color coding system for power priority and power priority system.
A feature unique to the IH 86 series was its Control Center Cab, which provided more space than previous cabs while seating the operator 1.5 feet further forward for an enhanced driving experience. Furthermore, more glass was installed with scoop-style opening side windows and a large rear window. A digital data center module enabled instantaneous readings of vital information such as engine rpm, PTO RPM, and travel speed.
Overall, IH’s 86 Series tractor series was highly successful. Each machine was well constructed, performed exceptionally in the field, and sold at an attractive price point. Furthermore, these tractors were easy to maintain due to many parts being shared across numerous IH models.

The 1586 was one of the last great IH tractors, built to be a workhorse. These powerful machines were known as “King of the Hill,” capable of withstanding anything you threw their way. Less complex than some of its earlier IH models and easier to operate, it would last years on end without breaking down or needing repairs.
These tractors were considered extremely fast for their time. Reaching speeds up to 132 mph, they had powerful engines. Other features unique to these tractors included front-wheel drive and 18-speed synchronized transmission, as well as a forward air-flow cooling system that pulled air from beneath the hood into the front grille for blowout, a power priority hydraulic system that prioritized three pumps, color-coded hydraulic lines and controls and color priority control system that prioritized three pumps – these were just some of their highlights.
IH’s success in the tractor market led to numerous changes within the company. Their Farmall Cub was an iconic tractor produced until 1979; however, IH needed to adapt their tractors in order to compete with the increasing demands of the marketplace, so they created 50 series tractors as a response.
The 50 series IH tractors were an instantaneous hit and revolutionized people’s perception of IH tractors. Not only were they faster than their older predecessors, but their more comfortable ride made for an unforgettable driving experience – not to mention their sleek, stylish designs that stood out against other models on the market. So successful was IH’s 50 series line-up that it ultimately became its best-selling line ever.
